Steven Garner, Electromechanical Engineer NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING

Steven Garner (32) never planned to work in the pumps industry. After graduating from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, he was grateful to be offered a job in shipbuilding. Upon reporting to his first day on the job, he was surprised—but excited and intrigued—to be informed his work would primarily revolve around pumps. He found himself dropped into the deep end almost immediately, being expected to resolve increasingly complex pump issues with minimal assistance. His technical aptitude and problem-solving abilities enabled him to rise through the ranks of the company, and even now, nine years later, he still enjoys learning new things and tackling complex challenges.

Garner’s success stems from his own natural aptitude and work ethic, but he also owes a great deal to his mentor and former supervisor, Dan Harris. “He was a senior engineer within my group when I started at my company, who then deservedly was promoted to my supervisor. He had a vast knowledge of pumps and he challenged me every day to become a better engineer. He is the reason I am the engineer and pump professional I am today, and I will be forever grateful.”

When asked what he was most excited about for the industry’s future, he said, “With increased difficulties in material sourcing and the supplier manufacturing base, additive manufacturing offers a promising alternative to the future of pumps and engineering as a whole. The idea of manufacturing equipment cheaper with the same or greater quality should have everyone excited.”

Anyone observing Garner’s career successes may be surprised to learn he has been visually impaired for his entire life, a fact he has never let slow him down. “I will not let my impairment control my life. I hope people will be able to look at me and be inspired to take on any challenge that may face them.”

What is one thing you wish you’d known before getting into the industry?

I wish I would have learned the importance of pumps prior to joining the industry. The topic of pumps was very briefly touched on in school. Incoming engineering professionals may not be exposed enough to the existence of pump industry jobs when they are applying at the end of college. Knowing the importance of pumps in various applications may help sway young engineers to enter the industry.
