AUSTIN, Texas (May 30, 2012) – Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Sockalingam "Sam" Kannappan of Houston and Edward Summers of Austin to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers for terms to expire Sept. 26, 2017. The board licenses qualified engineers, enforces the Texas Engineering Practice Act and regulates the practice of professional engineering in Texas.
Kannappan is a professional engineer and senior design engineer for SNC-Lavalin Hydrocarbons and Chemicals. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Gas Pipeline Safety Research Committee, a board member of the Society of Piping Engineers and Designers, and an advisory board member of the Asia Society of Texas. He is a past member of the Texas On-Site Wastewater Treatment Research Council. Kannappan received a bachelor's degree from Annamalai University in India and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas.
Summers is a retired certified public accountant (CPA) and professor emeritus of accounting at the University of Texas. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, past president of the Texas Society of CPAs, and a past member of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. He is a troop leader for the Flower Mound Boy Scouts of America and a past member of the Red McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame Committee. Summers received a bachelor's degree from Rice University, a Master of Business Administration and Doctorate of Business Administration from the University of Texas. He is being reappointed to the board.
