  • Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets and cover with insulating covers
  • Caulk around pipes where they enter the home
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas (attic, crawlspace, basement, etc.)
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing
  • Let water drip from faucets when temperatures are extremely cold

Lambeau Field, home to the Green Bay Packers, has long used a heating system to keep its field from freezing in the winter. Up until 1997, it used electric coils buried in the turf to generate heat. Now, the field has a 34-mile-long system of boilers, pumps, tubes and a water/glycol mixture to keep it ice-free. The boiler room has 12 boilers providing 48 million British thermal units (Btu) of heat to the stadium, four pumps dedicated to the pipe system that goes out underneath the field and 16 sensors to monitor temperatures across the field.

At the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, Singaporean company Brewerkz partnered with the country’s national water agency to provide attendees with a hoppy pilsner called NEWBrew, made from recycled sewage water. The collaboration aimed to provide a drink option for the conference while also drawing attention to Singapore’s water reclamation efforts and water-recycling worldwide.
